55% Emissions Cut: Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 and Motorsport UK Lead Grassroots Motorsport Toward a Greener Future

The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team, in partnership with Motorsport UK, is proud to have powered the 2025 IAME Waterswift Restricted Cadet Class of the British Kart Championships with sustainable fuel—marking a major step forward for environmentally conscious motorsport at the grassroots level.

From Round Three onwards, this new sustainable fuel blend delivered a 55% reduction in emissions compared to its fossil fuel equivalent—demonstrating the potential for meaningful environmental impact even in the early stages of a driver’s career. The initiative was fully funded by the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team as part of our broader commitment to decarbonise motorsport and accelerate the use of sustainable technologies beyond Formula One.

Bradley Lord, Team Representative, Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team:
“Our team is dedicated to the pursuit of sustainable high performance—and that begins at grassroots level. Just as we prepare for Formula One’s next chapter in 2026, we’re proud to support initiatives like this that drive change across the wider motorsport ecosystem. Huge thanks to Motorsport UK for their collaboration in helping the next generation of racers move toward a more sustainable future.”

The British Kart Championships have long been a proving ground for motorsport’s elite. George Russell, our current Formula One driver, competed in the series in 2010, and rising stars from our Junior Programme—Kenzo Craigie and Ethan Jeff-Hall—are following in his footsteps.

George Russell, Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team Driver:
“Karting plays a vital role in shaping the future of our sport. It’s where drivers learn, grow, and dream big. I’m proud to see our team’s work with sustainable fuels in Formula One extending to grassroots motorsport—it’s a brilliant step towards a cleaner, more responsible future.”

This initiative is more than just a fuel switch—it’s a statement of intent. By supporting sustainable fuel in the IAME Waterswift Restricted Cadet Class, we’re investing in the future of both the planet and the sport.

Dan Parker, Head of Karting, Motorsport UK:
“We’re proud to partner with Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team on this forward-thinking project. While karting’s carbon footprint may be relatively small, it’s one of the sport’s most visible platforms. Switching to sustainable fuel allows young drivers to develop their skills while helping reduce emissions—without compromising performance.”

As we move toward our goal of Net Zero by 2030, the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team remains committed to engineering change—on and off the track.
