A New Era Begins: Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team Launches the W17

The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team has officially unveiled its 2026 challenger, the W17, marking the start of Formula 1’s new technical era. Built for the sport’s sweeping regulation changes, the W17 features a lighter, shorter, and narrower chassis, active aerodynamics, and a next-generation hybrid Power Unit powered by advanced sustainable fuel from PETRONAS.

Drivers and Lineup

George Russell and Kimi Antonelli continue as race drivers after a strong 2025 season, while Fred Vesti steps up as Third Driver. The team also welcomes new Development Drivers: Doriane Pin, Joshua Dürksen, and former F1 racer Anthony Davidson, strengthening simulator and testing programmes.

Power Unit and Fuel Innovation

At the heart of the W17 is Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrain’s all-new hybrid unit, delivering a near 50:50 split between combustion and electric power. With the removal of the MGU-H and a leap in MGU-K output from 120 kW to 350 kW, the system integrates advanced energy recovery strategies.

PETRONAS provides bespoke sustainable fuels, designed as part of a complete performance system alongside lubricants and fluids.

Chassis and Aerodynamics

The W17 embodies F1’s 2026 revolution: a shorter wheelbase, reduced width, and lower minimum weight. Active aerodynamics replace DRS, with movable wings balancing drag and downforce. Narrower tyres and revised suspension complete the transformation, promising closer racing and greater efficiency.

Leadership Voices

Team Principal Toto Wolff called 2026 “a decisive moment for our team and for the sport,” while Technical Director James Allison described the regulations as “a wholesale transformation of almost every aspect of the car.” Managing Director of HPP Hywel Thomas added: “It’s not merely an evolution; it’s a revolution.”

Identity and Design

The W17 debuts a refreshed team logo and striking new livery. A dynamic PETRONAS green flow line sweeps across the car, blending iconic Mercedes silver with deep black, while AMG-inspired rhombus detailing and the three-pointed star pattern reinforce the team’s heritage.
