Driving Toward Net Zero: Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Expands Carbon Removals Portfolio

The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team has announced a bold expansion of its global carbon removals portfolio—a multi-year commitment designed to accelerate the development of high-integrity climate solutions and set a new benchmark for sustainability in sport.

This pioneering initiative represents one of the most diverse and globally distributed carbon removals portfolios in world sport, with projects spanning Brazil, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Denmark, and India. By aligning with the F1 race calendar, the portfolio aims to deliver meaningful impact in the communities and environments where the team competes.

Seven new projects across six breakthrough technologies have been added, including Direct Air Capture, Biomass Storage, Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage, Biochar, Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement, and Enhanced Rock Weathering. Together, these solutions target durable removals essential for addressing residual emissions that cannot be eliminated through reductions.

In total, the team is investing in approximately 18,900 tCO2e of nature-based, hybrid, and engineered projects to meet its target of Race Team Control Net Zero by 2030. The expanded portfolio is curated and verified by CUR8, ensuring durability, transparency, and best-practice methodology across all projects.

Speaking at Economist Impact’s Sustainability Week, Alice Ashpitel, Head of Sustainability, emphasized: “Emissions reduction remains our priority, and high-quality carbon removals are essential for tackling the residual emissions that remain. By investing early across a diverse set of technologies and regions, we’re contributing to upscaling durable climate solutions while supporting the communities and environments in which we race.”

This commitment is shared by team partners including Signify, UBS, and Nasdaq, alongside industry pioneers such as Meta AI and Microsoft, who continue to accelerate the carbon removals sector.

By investing now, Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team is not only advancing the credibility and commercial viability of durable climate solutions but also reinforcing Formula One’s collective ambition to achieve Net Zero by 2030—engineering change both on and off the track.
