Logistics Leader Powers ETH Zurich’s Solar Racing Team to the Australian Outback

The road to the sun begins again. For the second time, Gebrüder Weiss is partnering with the aCentauri Solar Racing Team from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich, delivering expert logistics support for one of the world’s most demanding endurance events: the World Solar Challenge 2025 in Australia.

After a promising debut in 2023, where the Swiss team claimed 12th place, the ETH students are back with a more advanced solar-powered car—boasting enhanced aerodynamics and a larger solar array—and their sights firmly set on breaking into the top ten.

We’re proud to be on board once again as logistics partner for this incredible student-driven project,” says Frank Haas, Head of Communications at Gebrüder Weiss. “Supporting long-term, sustainable innovation aligns perfectly with our mission—and we’re thrilled to see how far this team can go. They’ve already proven that solar mobility isn’t just possible—it’s powerful.”

Precision Logistics for a Pioneering Project

Shipping a custom-built solar race car halfway around the world is no small task. After sending the technical equipment via sea freight in May, Gebrüder Weiss is now overseeing the air transport of the vehicle itself, following a high-profile live presentation and final test drive at their Wolfurt terminal.

The vehicle is being handled through Gebrüder Weiss’s IATA-certified Air & Sea Terminal, where it has undergone stringent packaging, safety, and inspection protocols in line with International Air Transport Association (IATA) standards. The car will fly via Frankfurt Airport directly to Australia—with no delays or intermediate stops.

Once on the ground in Adelaide, the baton passes to the local Gebrüder Weiss team, who will coordinate customs clearance and final delivery to the University of Adelaide, where the team will make final preparations ahead of the race.

3,000 Kilometers of Innovation Ahead

Kicking off in Darwin on August 24, the World Solar Challenge spans over 3,000 kilometers of rugged terrain through the Australian outback. Since 1987, the race has been a proving ground for the world’s most innovative minds, pushing the boundaries of sustainable transportation and renewable energy.

For Gebrüder Weiss, a company with more than 500 years of history, the partnership is part of a broader commitment to future mobility. Since 2021, the logistics provider has been actively supporting projects with universities, start-ups, and research teams—offering more than just transport services. The goal: to champion next-generation technology and drive the energy transition forward.

“By connecting visionaries with real-world logistics expertise, we help turn ideas into impact,” adds Haas. “Projects like aCentauri don’t just race
